Cap'N Crunch's Captain Canuck Cereal

Back in 2021 I saw a limited edition Canadian version of Cap'N Crunch cereal called Cap'N Crunch's Canuck Crunch. But to me, something was wrong, it's called Canuck Crunch, but there on the front of the box was the old Cap'n Crunch. Shouldn't this box have Captain Canuck on the front!? So, I took it upon myself to correct this mistake. And here you have the real 'faux' Cap'N Crunch's Canuck Crunch. And of course on the back of the box you can cut out your Captain Canuck membership card, and somewhere deep down inside  the cereal box you can find one of four Captain Canuck mini figures... Or at least you could if this really existed!

Hey look... I'm in a Captain Canuck comic!

Comley Comix
Captain Canuck #6 from 1979 was one of my first comic books and the one that really got me into collecting comics! The original series ran just 14 issues, from 1975 until its end in 1981. Many years later a limited edition #15 was released. Then 23 years later, a new Captain Canuck mini series titled Unholy War was released. When I saw it solicited in Previews I was so excited! I quickly wrote and mailed off a letter to Richard Comely telling him how excited I was that after so many years of waiting, there was finally going to be some new Captain Canuck comic books. To my surprise, when issue #1 was released in October 2004, right there in the back of the book, was my letter!

So far, I have had letters printed in two of my three favourite comic books, Captain Canuck, and Groo the Wanderer. Now I just have to wait for them to start printing letters in Batman again, and I can try to make it three for three!

I did make one mistake in my letter, when I wrote that I was member #6 in the Captain Canuck Club. I am actually #13. Sorry I lied in my letter. At the time I wrote my letter, I could not find my membership card, and for some reason I remembered being member #6. I'm so glad I can correct my error 16 years later. Feels good to get that off my chest.

Captain Canuck Unpublished Comic Covers

Unreleased issue 4 of Captain Canuck Reborn series from 1993
Back in January 2008 I did a post on Captain Canuck and used one of these desktops I had created for myself. I am no Photoshop expert, but I did have fun 'trying' to color the covers myself. Recently I decided to make a few tweaks to my work and decided to share them here.
I am always excited to get the chance to see unpublished artwork from my favorite comics. The first two of these unpublished covers were printed in a Canadian comic magazine back in the late 80's (I think, I can't find the actual magazine).
The first one, issue 15, was scheduled to be released back in 1981, but the series was canceled before its release. It did finally receive a special limited collectors edition in 2004.
The next cover is the never produced second Summer Special. I was told by Richard Comely that only the cover was ever made, none of the interior artwork was ever done.
The third cover is for the unreleased issue 4 of the Captain Canuck Reborn series from 1993. I got this cover from the solicitation in the Diamond Previews catalog back in 1993. I have always been curious if this issue was actually completed, or if just the cover was produced?

Captain Canuck 1979 Reintroduction Letter

Captain Canuck issue #4Back in 1980 when I was just learning of the enjoyment to be found in the pages of superhero comic books, I had a neighbour who showed me his modest comic book collection. In it he had 3 or 4 Superman comics and one Captain Canuck comic book. Something about that Captain Canuck comic seemed really cool and I asked him if I could have it, to which he asked, "Do you have anything to trade?" I don't remember what I ended up trading him for it, but the end result was I got to go home with my new copy of Captain Canuck, issue #6. I read it 3 or 4 times, and just couldn't get enough. On my next visit to the Bookaneer book store (which sold comic books), I asked is he had any Captain Canuck comic books and he pointed me to the rack on the wall behind the cash register. On it was all the newest comic books, and there in amongst all the other super hero comics was issue #7 of Captain Canuck!
I was so captivated by my first two Captain Canuck issues that I asked if I could subscribe to the comic. My mother who was always trying to find things I would read, was more than happy to pay the $3.90 for a years subscription.
Ever since I wrote my post about my first two comic books I have been wanting to find my copy of Captain Canuck #6 so that I can display it along with my Rom and Silver Surfer comics as my very first comic books. Today I decided to hunt though my comic boxes for the issue. After spending a while hunting though boxes, I was not able to find that particular issue - I did find a few copies of #6, all were in much to good condition to be that first issue I traded for. What I did find was a copy of issue #4 that I bought at a thrift shop years ago. What made this issue interesting was that inside it was a letter from CKR Productions, LTD that was addressed to "Original subscribers of Captain Canuck".
I think its pretty cool that a Captain Canuck fan (myself) just happened to purchase an old issue in a thrift shop that still had this letter inside. I would guess that there were not that many subscribers to the comic during the first 3 issues, so this letter would seem pretty scarce, and finding one still tucked inside the comic book years latter, priceless!Letter to original subscribers of Captain Canuck
PS: I'll have to keep hunting for my first copy of Captain Canuck #6.

Captain Canuck Hard Cover from IDW

I am pretty excited about the upcoming release of Captain Canuck, Vol. 1 Hard Cover from IDW this summer (152 pages, $24.99). This first collection reprints issues #4-10 of the original Captain Canuck series. The second volume will contain issues #11-15 and the Summer Special. The remaining first 3 issues will be released as a special collected edition directly from creator Richard Comely. Although I have already preordered my copy of this first volume, I must say that I am somewhat disappointed by the way they have chosen to release these. I would much prefer that they either release the complete 16 issue run in one giant deluxe hard cover edition, or two volumes, the first with issues #1-8 and #9-15 + Summer Special. Ever since I heard about www.librarybinding.com, I have been thinking about creating my own hard cover Captain Canuck book with all the comics in one volume, and after getting this first official hard cover, it may just whet my appetite enough to finally make my own complete edition!

Captain Canuck Unplublished

Captain Canuck unpublished covers
Tonight I present a desktop I made a few years back. This desktop shows 3 Captain Canuck (Canada's own superhero) comics that were never officialy released. Actually that is not entirely true, as issue #15 was released as a special limited edition of 150 signed and numbered copies, in 2004. That makes 23 years between issue #14 (released in April 1981) and issue #15. This is not the only time that Captain Canuck issues had a long gap between issues. Issue #4 of the original series was released in 1976, with a cliffhanger ending. Readers had to wait 3 years for issue #5 which was released in 1979, before the cliffhanger would be revealed and they would find out who was behind the Captain's mask.
Issue #15 was released as a special limited edition, and I have issue #53 (of 150). I have one more, but its packed away somewhere, and I am not sure of the number. This special printing has a nice colour cover and black and white interior pages. There are 28 pages, 18 pages from the original issue, 7 pages of the syndicated Captain Canuck newspaper comics, and 3 pages of news, updates, ads etc. For a huge Captain Canuck fan like myself, this was a wonderful opportunity to add something to my collection that I had always wished I could have read back in 1981.
The other two unpublished issues shown are;
The unpublished Captain Canuck Summer Special #2, which, I was told recently by Richard Comley, that only the cover was ever produced, no interior pages were drawn. For my desktop, I coloured the b/w cover myself in Photoshop.
Issue #4 of Captain Canuck Reborn. I have no info on this, other than this small b/w cover that was published in an issue of Previews magazine soliciting this comic, which never came out. I have no idea if it was actually a finished product that just didn't get released, or was just a cover, much like the Summer Special #2.

Original Hand Drawn Captain Canuck Artwork

original hand drawn Captain Canuck artwork
Here is a cool drawing that I received from Richard Comely some years ago when I was a member of the Captain Canuck fan club. Along with the usual fan club items such as membership card, signed comics, cards, pins etc, I also received some great hand drawn artwork by Richard Comely including this drawing of Captain Canuck with what looks like lasers coming out of his gloves - something he never had in the comic. If you look closely, you will notice that the drawing of the hand with the lasers coming out of it is on a piece of paper that has been stuck on top of the original drawing of his regular hand. Not sure why he did this drawing, but its a nice piece in my collection.

Captain Canuck Vs the Walrus

The other day I was at the library and this particular magazine caught my eye. I could only see half the cover (there is a half cover with text, that can be folded back to reveal the complete picture without text), but the artwork looked very familiar. It turned out it was a drawing of Canadian super hero Captain Canuck, drawn by Captain Canuck creator Richard Comely. It was the February 2007 issue of a Canadian magazine called The Walrus. I took it out along with a pile of other great reads, including the Overstreet Comic Price Guide.
When I got home, I quickly thumbed through the magazine looking for an article on my favorite comic hero, but was disappointed to find that the cover drawing and a small note on the contents page, "Cover: Captain Canuck has been appearing in comic books since 1975. Painting by Richard Comely" were the only Captain Canuck items to be found in the magazine. Inside was an article which said "To The Rescue! Have the Liberals found their Captain Canuck? which is I guess why someone thought it would be a good idea to put a comic book character on the cover.
As for the magazine its self, its one of those magazines where its really hard to tell exactly what the focus (if any) the magazine has. The Walrus magazine is definently not a magazine I will be picking up again, but it was a neat treat to see my favorite super hero on the cover of a recent magazine sitting there at my local library... and now I have a scan of it here on my blog for all to see!
