Little Golden Book Monday #123

Today's Little Golden Book is Rabbit and his Friends with story and pictures by Richard Scarry. Originally printed in 1953, this copy is the Third Printing from 1974. I picked this one up because I liked the cute animal artwork on the cover. It wasn't until I got home and had a look though it that I realized I recognized the artwork. A quick flip to the front inside cover revealed that it was none other than Richard Scarry who had done the artwork, along with writing the story.
The story is about Rabbit who finds an egg who he believes belongs to Mrs. Hen, but when the egg hatched, there stood the strangest animal that ever was!
"He doesn't look like any animal I have ever seen before", said Rabbit. "He has a big beak and little webbed feet just like Duck."
"He has a tail and a fur coat just like Beaver," said Mrs. Hen. "And he is very shy, like Squirrel." "What are you, my dear?" asked Mrs. Hen.
But the roly-poly animal said, "I don't know." Then splash, kersplash! that roly-poly animal jumped into the river and swam right down to the bottom.
The strange little animal turns out to be a platypus, the rarest and most interesting animal in the whole world.

Little Golden Book Monday #80

Today's Little Golden Book is When Bunny Grows Up written by Patsy Scarry and illustrated by Richard Scary. This edition is from 1997 and was originally printed in 1955 with the title The Bunny Book.
Growing up I loved Richard Scarry's Busytown books. I could sit for hours looking at his cross section drawings of buildings, vehicles etc. It was so great to get a simplified idea of how things such as a factory worked. I also loved finding Lowly Worm who was hidden on each page page of the Busytown books.
As an adult, I still really appreciate Richard's whimsical drawings. This Little Golden Book is another example of his great work. Here is one of the pages I liked the most in this book. I wonder if little rabbit got in trouble for painting on the wall, or was congratulated for his work?

Little Golden Book Monday #53

Today's Little Golden Book is Richard Scarry's Best Little Word Book Ever! This book is from 1992, and is based on the hugely successful Richard Scarry series.
I loved these books as a child. My favorites were the ones that showed cutaways of buildings so you could see things like how a lumber mill worked, and cut aways of things such as planes and boats, to give you an idea of how things worked. I used to sit and stare at those drawings for hours!
This book has a great cut away of a family home. You can see the kitchen, living room, hallway, bedroom and bathroom. These is even a carpenter on the roof.
I also loved Lowly Worm. He was usually hidden somewhere on the page and it was always fun trying to find where he was hidden. To my count, there are 12 Lowly's hidden throughout this book. Lowley truly was the original Waldo!
